The Best Singles of 2005
Part one of our review of 2005 sees the best singles of the year on display. Obviously choosing the songs was a hard task, and a painfully drawn-out procedure was carried out in deciding what should make the list. Sadly there is no McFly, no Tony Christie, and definitely no Crazy Frog. For one way or another these songs shaped the year that we have just lived through, and they are in no particular order.
Hard-Fi – Living For The Weekend
One of the feel good tracks towards the end of summer, the second single from stunning new band Hard-Fi created a media storm and the band were lifted onto another level. The song itself is one of my favourites this year, and fans of most genres seem to sing along whenever it's on the radio – surely a sign of success.
Daniel Powter – Bad Day
Yes, so our list has a pop record on it, but it's not just any pop record. This song is insanely catchy, but not in a bad way. This song finished fifth on ITV's ‘Record of the Year', but despite this people above the age of seven can still enjoy the song.
Paul McCartney & U2 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
This was the song that opened Live 8 and was available for download only one hour later, and became the fastest selling download straight away. Not just a crappy charity record, the classic song was an amazing way to start the biggest concert of all time.
The Killers – Somebody Told Me
Despite buying this CD at the end of 2004, it was re-released in 2005 for ‘fans' who happened to like “Somebody Told Me” which is perhaps the best song of the year. Brandon Flowers may be an asshole but the music he writes is somehow amazing. The lyrics are incredibly weird, but everybody loves it. This was the song that made the band huge, and for good reason.
Coldplay – Fix You
Dreadful song but I felt it was necessary to include it in this list. There are much better songs on the album (“Talk” being one of them) but this was played so much throughout the year, even before the album was released. This wasn't scheduled to be their second single but due to popular demand the guys decided they had to release it, and the song became a cult classic.
U2 – Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
One of the first number one singles of the year, and the second single to be released from the incredible “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” album. The song was written by Bono about his father, but instead of just being a dull remembrance, it was edited, recorded and finally released (it was supposed to be on their previous album). This is one of my favourite songs of the year, and the biggest band on the planet proves that they can still write classic songs.
Foo Fighters – Best Of You
This was the first single from their comeback album, and was my favourite song of the year. The song itself is very powerful and fans of rock and pop found themselves enjoying it, and the Foo Fighters found that they had released one of the greatest ballads of all time.
Oasis - The Importance Of Being Idle
Oasis returned in 2005 but in my opinion shouldn't have bothered. Critics hated the last album and loved this one, but I have exactly the opposite opinion. The Gallaghers are still trying to write an album to surpass “(What's The Story) Morning Glory” but they will never do it. This song was a number one but something that I couldn't bear listening to, as the tune is nothing less than annoying. Many Oasis fans loved it though so it must have had something good about it.
Kaiser Chiefs – I Predict A Riot
A song that was released twice this year, this song was the first release from the album, and indie fans went crazy over it. When it was re-released it didn't fare so well as the Kaiser Chiefs were already huge by that point, and everybody had the album already. The favourites for the Mercury Music Prize certainly know how to make people get up and dance, and this song was no exception. Definitely one of the singles of the year.
Franz Ferdinand – Do You Want To?
This was the comeback single from the amazing Franz Ferdinand, and was a song I'd waited for since 2003. At first it was annoying and I hated it, but it slowly grew on me, and proved that the first album (cleverly entitled Franz Ferdinand) was not a fluke. This for many was the single of the year, and it's very easy to see why.
